Workshops focused on biolitec´s innovative laser technology in proctology both theoretically and practically
La Torre, 11. November 2013 – On Friday, 18th October, the Surgery Service and the Coloproctology Unit at the hospital Universitari Mútua Terrassa (HUMT) organized a theoretic and practical workshop called “Application of laser in proctology – closure of anal fistulas”. It started with an introduction by Dr. Manuel Álvarez, Medical Manager at HUMT, and Dr. Enrique Veloso, Service Manager.
Well-known Dr. Deska, Senior Physician at the Surgical Clinic of Marien-Hospital Witten, Germany, lead the conference “Introduction to a surgical technique: FiLaC (Fistula Tract Laser Closure) and LHP (Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty)”. Dr. Deska also performed five workshops at the OR of HUMT.
The extraordinary feature of the laser method is, in comparison to conventional surgery, that the laser denatures the tissue alongside the anal fistula. Technically, the new diode laser has a shorter wavelength (1470nm) whose fiber applies the energy radially. When the fiber is inserted into the fistula, the laser energy destroys the surrounding tissue, the epithelia. The anal sphincter is not affected. Furthermore, this method does not require the use of any additional material, and it doesn´t need any following cures. To sum up, this method is supposed to achieve better results with minimum complications; the anal sphincter apparatus remains untouched, and the risk of incontinence is avoided.
